Several area fire departments responded Saturday evening to a structure fire on County Road 525, south of I-70.
A two-story unoccupied farmhouse, several trees and a van were fully engulfed when Reelsville / Washington Township volunteer fire crews arrived.
Command requested a second alarm due to the volume of fire and the distance the fire was from a fill site. Crews worked to keep the fire from spreading to a trailer and a garage that were also on the property. However, the unoccupied house and van were total losses, and an excavator was brought in to remove smoldering material from the basement so the fire could be fully extinguished, and the house demolished.
Crews used 26,000 gallons of water. There were no injuries reported. The Reelsville / Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department issued thanks to several departments and companies who assisted us on this fire that extended well into early Sunday morning including Greencastle, Cloverdale Township, Madison
Township, Poland, Jackson Township, Van Buren Township, PCEMS, PCSD, Putnam County CERT, SW REMC, Putnam County Dispatch, and JAMARR Excavating.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation as of this report.
