Congressman Yakym issues statement on Elkhart shooting

'Our team remains in contact with local and state authorities and will continue to offer our full support as the investigation unfolds.'

Congressman Rudy Yakym (IN-02) has released a statement after a shooting at Martin’s Super Market in Elkhart on Monday left three people dead, including the suspected shooter, and two police officers wounded.

"Our hearts are with the victims and their families after last night's devastating incident in Elkhart. Our team remains in contact with local and state authorities and will continue to offer our full support as the investigation unfolds," Yakym said. 

"I am so grateful for the brave officers who ran into harm's way in order to protect the innocent shoppers and am praying for their continued recovery. We are forever indebted to our public safety officials for their strength in times of tragedy," he added. "Elkhart, Indiana has always been a resilient city and together, we will work to move forward and build a stronger and safer community."

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit continues to investigate the shooting incident, which began with a 911 to the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center at about 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Officers and other first responders were dispatched to the store and arrived shortly after. Upon arrival, they were directed to two shooting victims inside the store. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. 

Officers engaged the shooting suspect nearby, outside the store. During that engagement, two Elkhart Police Department officers sustained gunshot wounds, and the alleged shooting suspect was shot and killed.

Both officers were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment. At last information, one officer was treated and released from the hospital and the second officer remains at the hospital in fair but stable condition.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is interviewing potential witnesses and is asking anyone with further information to call 574-295-2825. 

“In this horrific situation, words cannot express the pain felt in our community when a tragic incident like this happens," Elkhart Police Chief Dan Milanese said. "This pain is especially felt by the victim’s families, the responding officers, the families of the wounded officers, and all the witnesses to this tragic incident. I want to thank our local law enforcement partners, including the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police, for their support and assistance during this time. I ask for the community to continue to keep all those effected by this horrific event in your thoughts and prayers.”
