Culver town water is safe, lead content below state safety standards

Recently, Culver Town Manager, Kevin Danti, and Utilities Superintendent Bob Porter sent many town property owners a letter concerning galvanized water service lines.

“The Utilities Department has been working to identify the material used to connect each household to the water main throughout Culver and subsequently identify lines that might be lead or have lead fittings," said Culver Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim.

She is urging those citizens who received a letter from the town to take a moment to review the letter.

The Culver letter discusses the 2014 water issue in Flint, Michigan, and how the federal government passed the Lead and Copper Rule mandating that all lead service lines be removed from water systems. This unfunded mandate has been passed down to the cities and towns in Indiana.

The standardized letter many recently received from the Culver Water Department was a requirement of the Lead and Copper Rule.  Danti said, “If Culver residents responded to the town’s initial waterline survey or their house was constructed after 1987, you may not have received this letter.”

Bob Porter, Culver Utility Superintendent, assured citizens that Culver’s water supply is safe to drink and not hazardous to public health.  He said, “Our water department continually monitors the water supply and has never failed a lead test.  The water is always below the state-mandated safety standards for lead content.”

Culver residents can view the results of the town’s most recent water quality report at www.in.gov/towns/culver/services/
