Each year on July 17, history, culture and tattoo artists are celebrated with National Tattoo Day. According to National Day Calendar, the word "tattoo" derives from the Polynesian language for tatau, meaning "to tap, or to mark."
The history behind National Tattoo Day is as ancient as the art of tattooing itself, with examples being found preserved in mummified flesh, dating back to prehistoric times. In the modern world, many continue to be fascinated with tattoos, with more and more people getting inked each year. Becoming more of a norm in society, the tattoo business is a booming career choice that's landed business owner Christian Thomas her dream job.
It's been a little over a month since Thomas opened her business Enchanted Tattoos at her private studio, located in The Spa at 416 E. Ninth St. in Rochester. Specializing in black and grey work, Thomas said she has a passion for providing people with economic friendly prices for professional, quality art with hopes of building a community.
Always having a pull for the arts, whether it be painting, drawing, clay, or crochet, tattooing was Thomas's next step for infusing her passion into a career.
“I've always been into art, but tattooing was just the latest thing since the pandemic," Thomas said. "I realized I really loved it, and had a passion for it, and I like working with the people I get to make it with. It's just been a dream job for me."
Thomas was happily surprised to see that since she's opened her doors at Enchanted Tattoos on June 1, the community has opened their trust to her work, keeping her booked each week with new clients seeking the whimsical art Thomas provides. Thomas said she's had at least one client each day since June, something she wasn't expecting but is extremely grateful for.
“Your clients become friends,“ she said, “Doing each client's tattoos, I've discovered that they do trust me and open up to me, and from that I'm able to learn about them very quickly. Once I get to know them, learning about who they are and what they like, I'm able to work with each person, individually, and get a feel for what they like so I can anticipate their next design. I do love the art so much, but the community is what makes everything worth it."
Enchanted Tattoos is open by appointment only via Facebook, but Thomas said she is very flexible with hours and getting her clients in quickly. Thomas said she also has a QR code on her door for any clients stopping by The Spa with questions while she is away from the studio. Thomas said she is always available to those who are looking to inquire, but not commit, and encourages anyone with curiosity or questions to reach out.
