Gail Karas retires as director of 911 and EMA

Gail Karas announced Friday at an executive session with Fulton County Commissioners that she will be retiring from her positions as the county's 911 Communications director and Emergency Management Agency director as of July 5.

She plans on keeping her position as a deputy coronor with the Fulton County Coroner's Office. That position is a contracted one with the county, with six months remaining.

On Tuesday, the Fulton County Council approved a request by Commissioner President Bryan Lewis to return the EMA director's position back to full-time status. Councilman Pete Karas, Gail's husband, abstained from voting.

Commissioner Rick Ranstead indicated that she had a new job lined up when asked about the reason behind her departure.

The EMA office continues to operate with one part-time deputy director and a group of volunteers.
