Senate Republicans look to implement better controls on Medicaid eligibility, saying program is growing at unsustainable rates.
State Sen. Stacey Donato, R-Logansport, says Senate Republicans are prioritizing Senate Bill 2 this year to help control Medicaid spending.
"Crafting a state budget is a difficult and complicated process because lawmakers must balance many different priorities," she said, adding that K-12 education has historically represented the largest share of the state's general fund spending.
However, she says Indiana's Medicaid spending has grown at a concerning rate in recent years, and it is eating away at the amount of funding legislators can give other priorities like education.
"Medicaid is an important resource for some Hoosiers, but in order to ensure those who need it most can continue to use it, we must make changes to the program," Donato said. "That's why Senate Republicans are prioritizing Senate Bill 2 this year, which would help control Medicaid spending by ensuring only those eligible can get benefits."
While it doesn't solve everything, she added, this bill is an important step toward better fiscal management of Medicaid.
