Jones had been convicted of second-degree murder in 2015.

A traffic stop led to a felony arrest of a man once convicted of murder.

About 2:30 a.m. Friday, a Knox County Sheriff’s deputy made a traffic stop on a vehicle for an expired license plate. During the stop, the driver gave false information to the deputy about his identity. The expired license plate on the vehicle was also not registered to the vehicle.

The deputy was able to determine the driver’s name to be Derek Alexander Jones. Jones had an active felony warrant for his arrest out of Lake County, Indiana. He also was in possession of a handgun.

Jones had been convicted of second-degree murder in 2015 so was not allowed to have a gun in his possession. Jones was taken into custody for the active felony warrant and additional charges of possession of a handgun by a serious violent felon.

Jones was then transported to the Knox County Jail where he was booked in for the active Lake County warrant and new charges of Obstruction, a Level 6 felony, for giving the deputy a false name and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 felony.
