Tate pleaded guilty was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Former Lawrence County resident Ray Tate made another appearance Tuesday in Wayne County Circuit Court.
The Hopkinsville, Kentucky man appeared via Zoom from the Menard Correctional Center. The hearing concerned his motion to withdraw his guilty plea in the death of Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Sean Riley in December 2021.
Tate pleaded guilty was sentenced to life in prison without parole. However, while in prison, Tate has sought to withdraw his guilty plea and have his life sentenced vacated saying he was coerced into a confession and was mentally unfit to do so.
The court allowed his efforts and now has set another court hearing on August 23 to allow Tate to formally withdraw his plea as part of the appeal process.
