Tate Back in Court

Convicted murderer and former Lawrence County resident Ray Tate was back in court this week. T

He Hopkinsville, Ky man made an appearance Tuesday via Zoom from the Menard Correctional Center. He is trying to have his guilty plea withdrawn and his life sentence with parole vacated in the December 2021 killing of Wayne County Sheriffs Deputy Sean Riley. Tate is currently acting as his own attorney after firing his court appointed counsel in July of 2023.

Tate is continuing to ask for a new trial in the case and maintains he was coerced into pleading guilty to Riley's death. The hearing in Wayne County Circuit Court dealt with whether or not Tate should have a second legal representative as the process continues. The state has objected with the presiding judge continuing the matter to March 26th at 1 p.m.
