Former Lawrence County resident Ray Tate is due back in court this week. His court hearing last Friday in Wayne County was postponed until Wednesday August 28th at 9 a.m. The postponement concerned two things-allowing the defense additional time to prepare Tate's request to have his guilty plea withdrawn for the shooting death of Wayne County Deputy Sean Riley and to increase security measures at the courthouse in Fairfield after an alledged escape plot by Tate was uncovered by the prosecution. As a result, Tate will appear in-person in shackles at the proceeding. Tate has maintained after pleading guilty to the crime that he was coerced into confessing and was not mentally competent. The court granted his effort from the Menard Correctional Center where he is serving a life sentence without parole.
