Another hearing on whether convicted murderer and former Lawrence County resident Ray Tate can withdraw his plea of guilty to the murder of an area sheriffs deputy in early August.
A status hearing was held for the 43 year old Hopkinsville, Ky man in Wayne County Circuit Court Tuesday. Tate had plead guilty to the December 2021 shooting death of Wayne County Sheriffs Deputy Sean Riley and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. But in July of 2023. Tate filed a motion with the court asking to withdraw his guilty plea, which he says was coerced and to have his life sentence vacated. The matter was continued by the presiding judge with another status hearing scheduled for Tuesday July 23rd. Tate remains incarcerated in the Menard Correctional Center and is due back in court Friday August 2nd. He still faces multiple charges from Missouri and in Clinton County Illinois for crimes committed in a spree after the killing of Riley.
