Alfred Gilbert Garner, Jr., age 73 of Marshall, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2024, surrounded by family at Mattoon Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
He was born on August 3, 1950, in Terre Haute, IN to Alfred G. Garner, Sr. and Virginia (Winkles) Garner. He was known to family as “Bert”. On August 19, 1972, Bert married Carolyn Brown in Lake Station, IN. For 51 years, they built a wonderful life with many memories together. As a young man, he served his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army. While serving, he bravely earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his courageous acts. Upon returning home, he earned certificates in electronics and HVAC service. He had worked for Sears and had his own HVAC company. Bert and Carolyn had attended the Wesleyan Church of Marshall until it closed. He enjoyed tractors, hunting, and fishing. Years ago, he was a member of the American Legion Post #279 of Miller, IN. Surviving family includes: his wife- Carolyn Garner of Marshall; two children- Katina Deremiah and husband Todd of Mattoon and Eric Garner of Marshall; six grandchildren- Jamie Apone and husband Tony, Angel Hall and husband Dalton, Andrew Deremiah and wife Marishka, Alyssa Deremiah, Christopher Martin, and Jimbob Plew; eight great-grandchildren; and several loved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bert was preceded in death by: his parents- Alfred, Sr. and Virginia Garner; brothers- Art and Steve Garner; and sister- Darlene Hiatt. A visitation will be held from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Friday, April 12, 2024, at the Cunningham-Young Funeral Home in Lawrenceville. A graveside service will follow immediately at Oaklawn Cemetery in St. Francisville. Military rites will be given at the cemetery.
