Donald “Don” Ray Cook, age 88 formerly of Lawrenceville, passed away peacefully surrounded by love on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at StoneBridge Memory Care of Olney.
Donald “Don” Ray Cook, age 88 formerly of Lawrenceville, passed away peacefully surrounded by love on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at StoneBridge Memory Care of Olney. He was born October 1, 1935, in East Chicago, IN to John and Elfreda (Mayo) Cook.
On August 21, 1965, Don married Lora Delong in Lawrenceville. She preceded him in death on July 1, 2022.
Don was a member of the United States Navy and also received his Master’s Degree in education from Eastern Illinois University. He was an Assistant Superintendent at Red Hill Unit #10 School District. Don taught 3rd grade for several years and was the Principal for Washington and Petty Schools. In 1994, he retired from Red Hill Unit #10 School District after spending almost 30 years in education.
He enjoyed working outside in the yard, doing woodworking, and drawing old barns and buildings. Don also enjoyed going to Ellis Park and the casino with his wife, Lora. Most of all, he loved being with his family. He took extreme pride in all five of his grandchildren, attending as many of their programs and games as possible.
Don will be remembered for his kindness and generosity. He made people smile wherever he went.
Surviving family includes: one daughter- Saundra Hough and husband Joe of Olney: one son- Brian Cook and wife LeighAnn of Lawrenceville: five grandchildren- Drew Wilson, Katie Cook, and Courtney Cook all of Lawrenceville and Jerrison and Gentry Hough both of Olney: one sister- Marcia Linville of Laughlin, NV: and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his: wife- Lora (Delong) Cook: both parents- John and Elfreda Cook: one son- John Charles Cook, and two brothers- Jack Cook and Richard Cook.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home in Bridgeport on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 p.m. Burial will take place in Bridgeport City Cemetery.
