Linda Elise Hungerford passed away at her home on Thursday, August 22, 2024.

Linda Elise Hungerford passed away at her home on Thursday, August 22, 2024.  She will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

Linda was born on June 28, 1954, in Oklahoma City, where her father was stationed in the Air Force. She grew up in Kankakee and Carbondale, Illinois. In Carbondale, she attended the University School, and Carbondale Community High School. She graduated from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale (SIU-C) in 1976, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. Following that, she attended medical school at the SIU-C School of Medicine. She did residencies at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.  As a physician, she practiced OB-GYN and Psychiatry, working mostly in rural Illinois locations, which suited her love of the country life.

Linda was passionate about many things, but she most loved nature and all the beautiful things it provides. She was very knowledgeable about birds of all kinds, she loved gardening (most recently acquiring a passion for hybrid daylilies), and she loved animals – particularly dogs. In her younger years, she raised show dogs – mostly cocker spaniels. She received many awards and national championships with her cockers.

Linda is remembered fondly by her former classmates and friends going back many years. She is survived by her sister, Suzanne Hungerford, Suzanne’s husband, Patrick Coppens of Morrisonville, New York, and her cousins, Rebecca Rubbo and Orin Hatton. Her parents, Harold and Patricia, predeceased her. We wish Linda peace and comfort with this passing.

There will be time to remember Linda will be on Tuesday September 3, 2024 from 1:00 until 3:00pm at the Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Nature Conservancy would honor Linda’s life. “Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts...”  - Rachel Carson
