An Elkhart woman with an immigration warrant was arrested by an officer with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department on Monday, September 2nd

At approximately 9:25 PM, Officer Wozniak initiated a traffic stop on a gray 2018 Honda Pilot on U.S. 31 at Tyler Road. During the investigation, he learned that a passenger in the vehicle, Sarahi Portillo Mejia, 45, of Mishawaka, had an outstanding warrant through Elkhart County. It was later discovered that she had used a false name years before to avoid this warrant.

During an extensive investigation involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, it was found that Mejia also had an active immigration warrant. She was taken into custody for the Elkhart County warrant, transported to the Marshall County Jail, and held for Elkhart County.

Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is a mere allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings, entitled to be represented by counsel, and entitled to a trial by jury, at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
