
According to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the state's unemployment rate in February was 4.3%. By comparison, the national unemployment rate reported for February was 4.1%.
In addition, Indiana’s labor force participation rate is 63.8% compared to the national rate of 62.4%. This rate is the percentage of Hoosiers 16 and older who are either working or actively looking for work. Those not in the labor force include students, retirees, and other non-working populations, such as individuals unable to work due to a disability or illness or adults responsible for their family's childcare needs. Indiana’s total labor force is 3,487,942, a new peak for Indiana.
In February, Marshall County's unemployment rate was 4.3%, ranking 54th out of 92 counties in Indiana. A year ago, in 2024, the unemployment rate was 4.2%, while in 2023, it recorded a rate of 3.7%, and in 2022, it was only 2.1%. In 2021, the unemployment rate stood at 3.9%.
Looking at the counties surrounding Marshall, you will find Starke County 4th on the list with an unemployment rate of 6.6%, followed by LaPorte County, 7th on the list with a rate of 5.4%. Fulton County is 16th on the list of Indiana counties with an unemployment rate of 5.0%, and St. Joseph County is 21st with a rate of 4.9%. Looking at the rest of the counties surrounding Marshall, you find Elkhart County at 31st with a rate of 4.6; Kosciusko County is 53rd on the list with the same unemployment rate as Marshall, 4.3%. While Pulaski County ranks 56th on the list, their unemployment rate is the same as Marshall County at 4.3%.
February 2025 total private employment is 2,825,200, a decrease of 3,300 from the previous month.
