October 2024 unemployment rates

According to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the state's unemployment rate in October was 4.4%. By comparison, the national unemployment rate reported for October was 4.1%.

In addition, Indiana’s labor force participation rate is 63.2%, compared to the national rate of 62.6%. This rate is the percentage of Hoosiers 16 and older who are either working or actively looking for work. Those not in the labor force include, primarily, students, retirees, and other non-working populations, such as individuals unable to work due to a disability or illness or adults responsible for their family's childcare needs. Indiana’s total labor force stands at 3,432,973, at its highest on record.

Marshall County’s unemployment rate in October was 4.4%, ranking it 33rd out of the 92 counties in the state. Looking at the counties surrounding Marshall, you will find Starke County high on the list at 8th with an unemployment rate of 4.8%, and right behind at 10th is LaPorte County with a rate of 4.6%. St. Joseph County is 16th on the list with an unemployment rate of 4.5, followed by Fulton County, where the rate is 4.4%, and they are ranked 18th.

Kosciusko County is ranked 23rd with an unemployment rate of 4.3, while Elkhart County is ranked 26th with a rate of 4.2.   Marshall County falls in line at 33rd with an unemployment rate of 4.0%, and Pulaski County is 68th with a rate of 3.5%.     

Howard County has the highest unemployment rate in the state at 8.7%, and Gibson County has the lowest rate at 3.0. 

October 2024 total private employment is 2,872,900 an increase of 100 from the previous month and 608,900 above the April 2020 Trough. This is a new Indiana private employment peak.

  • All Other (+800)
  • Private Education & Health Services (+100)

As of November 1st, there were 93,485 open job postings throughout the state. As of the week ending on October 26, 2024, Indiana had 20,802 continued unemployment insurance claims filed.
