Irma Eastwood Slack of Plymouth, Indiana passed away on November 25, 2024 at the age of 100. Irma Mae Eastwood was born on July 10, 1924 near Olmsted, Illinois to Irvin and Rena (Britt) Eastwood, the third of five children. She attended school there until at the age of sixteen she moved with her family to Chicago, graduating in 1942 from Hyde Park High School. Irma attended Olivet Nazarene College for a year before entering the workforce as a railway brakeman, doing a man’s job during those World War II years. This was followed by secretarial work at the University of Chicago, and a stint as an executive secretary to the Vice President of the Quaker Oats Company.
Irma married her husband, Robert William Slack, at the University of Chicago chapel on October 21, 1950. They resided in Fort Wayne and South Bend before moving to Plymouth in 1957. Bob and Irma were married for forty-three years until his passing in 1994. Primarily a loving homemaker, Irma also worked at the Plymouth License Branch, for Welcome Wagon, and as a realtor with Collins and Company for thirteen years. She worked as a hospice volunteer for many years as well, and served on the board of the Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home in Lebanon, Indiana. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Plymouth for sixty-seven years, serving on the Outreach committee, the prayer chain, and as a Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Joybreaks group, and in 2017 received the Blondena Kaiser Memorial Award. Irma was also a member of Tri Kappa.
Irma is survived by her four children, Howard (Susan) Slack, Christine (Harley) Houghton, Lisa (Peter VanDerlip) Duke, and Gordon (Theresa) Slack; nineteen grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert, three sisters, an infant brother, and grandson Jordan Slack.
Irma was a woman of great faith, a shining example to her loved ones and all who knew her.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 to 1:00 on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at First United Methodist Church, 400 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth. Funeral services will immediately follow with Pastor Lauren Hall officiating.
Burial will take place in the New Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth.
