James Martin Shay, Jr., age 88, of Culver, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2024. He was born on October 2, 1936, in Gary to James Sr. and Magdelene (Thyen) Shay.
A proud graduate of Lew Wallace High School, Class of 1954, Jim furthered his education at Saint Joseph’s College in Indiana. He enjoyed a long and fulfilling career at US Steel Corporation and Kobe Steel, where he retired as an Inventory Auditor. In addition to his professional pursuits, Jim served honorably in the Army Reserves, exemplifying his commitment to his country.
On September 27, 1969, Jim married Linda Hippie at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Gary, IN. Together, they created a nurturing and supportive family. He was a devoted father to Kathleen, James III, and Kevin, and a treasured grandfather to Michael, Natalie, and Drew.
Jim was known for his passion for sports, avidly supporting the Chicago Bears, Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago White Sox, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He also found joy in peaceful activities such as fishing on Lake Latonka or catching a round of golf with his friends.
A man of deep faith, Jim was a member of the Catholic community, attending Saint Mary’s of the Lake in Culver and most recently Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Plymouth. He was also a proud member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.
Jim will be remembered for his steadfast wisdom, always offering guidance and advice to those around him. He leaves behind a loving family and circle of friends who will deeply miss him.
Jim is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda; children, Kevin Shay, James Shay III, and Kathleen (Andy) Sheely; grandchildren, Michael, Natalie, and Drew; brother, Thomas (Carol) Shay; sister-in-law, Lynne Hippie; and nine nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Magdelene; sister, Dolores (Robert) Crabb; mother-in-law, Frances (Meredith) Jordan; and brother-in-law, Evan Hippie.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 11AM-1PM at St. Michael Catholic Church, 627 N. Walnut Street, Plymouth, IN 46563. Mass of Christian Burial will be held immediately following at 1PM with Fr. Jose Arroyo officiating.
Burial will take place at New Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth.
