Barbara J. Schouten, 74, of Rockville, Indiana, passed away Friday, March 22, 2024, at the Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care in Terre Haute.
She retired from the Indiana Department of Correction with 27 years of service. She was born October 1, 1949, in Clinton, Indiana to the late Russell Thomas Akers and Lorene Jean Kilburn Akers Britton. Survivors include her husband of 35 years, James A. “Andy” Schouten, whom she married December 17, 1988; also surviving, children, Rob (Bev) Lawson of Ferndale, Ritchy (Denise) Lawson of Judson, Ryan Lawson of Judson, Andy Edmonds, Jr. of Indianapolis, Christina (Matt) Collis of Indianapolis, Carrie (Brandon) McGuire of Los Angeles, California, Joseph (Dee) Schouten of Phoenix, Arizona, Candice (Mindy) Schouten of Las Vegas, Nevada; brother, Rick (Jean) Akers of Rockville; sister, Bev (Rick) Morris of Ferndale; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Dick Britton and brothers, Harold and Robert Akers. She was the first female correctional officer in the State of Indiana to oversee an all-male dormitory. She was a member of the Immanuel Southern Baptist Church, American Legion Fellenzer post 1752 auxiliary, and the Wabash Valley Corvette Club. She enjoyed attending car shows, playing bingo, and collected Bears, Coke and Elvis memorabilia. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, March 27, at Gooch Funeral Home, 112 W. Howard Street, Rockville, with the Rev. Mark Houvenagle officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Garden Cemetery in Rockville. Visitation is 12 noon until 2:00 pm Wednesday at Gooch Funeral Home.
