An accident injuring four people shut down U.S. 231 north of Greencastle for an extended period Tuesday evening and sent four to Indianapolis hospitals via medical helicopters.

According to the Indiana State Police and Putnam County Sheriff Jerrod Baugh, a pickup truck traveling north crossed the centerline of U.S. 231, striking a van belonging to the Indiana Department of Corrections head on.

The Indiana Department of Corrections van was occupied by two correctional officers and an inmate, Baugh confirmed to Giant FM. All three van occupants, as well as the driver of the truck were transported to Indianapolis area hospitals with serious injuries.

The Indiana State Police reconstruction team investigated the accident before reopening the roadway around 8 p.m.

"Awesome work on the scene by our Putnam County Emergency Service folks. It was amazing to witness these professionals at work," Baugh said.
