Major changes will be coming to downtown Greencastle within the next two weeks when it comes to the US 231 construction project.
According to Mayor Lynda Dunbar, an announcement from INDOT will be forthcoming that the intersection of Bloomington and Washington streets and Washington Street around the Putnam County Courthouse to Franklin Street will be closed completely until the Washington Street section is completed.
“INDOT determined in May that the city had sewer lines that were over a hundred years old and needed to be replaced before the road is completed,” Dunbar said in a release.
Greencastle and INDOT have reached an agreement for a cost share for the project, which Dunbar said will be a “real savings” to utility customers.
“The location of the sewer line does not leave enough space for a lane of traffic to be open on Washington Street,” the release said.
Dunbar said while she knows the closure will be an inconvenience to residents, it is important the project be done right and on time. Currently, the project is running behind schedule.
“With closing down the entire roadway, it enables the contractors to make up some real time and finish close to the initial completion date,” Dunbar said.
