Greencastle to hold ABC's of Property Tax Forum

As mayor of Greencastle, Lynda Dunbar has been paying a lot of attention to the ongoing property tax discussion within the Indiana General Assembly.

She has concerns of what potential cuts may mean and has heard from constituents, as well.

For all those reasons and then some, Dunbar is teaming up with Greencastle Clerk-Treasurer Mikayla Johnson to hold an ABC's of Property Tax event later this month. The event, which will be held at Greencastle City Hall, 1 N. Locust St., at 7 p.m. on March 25.

"It will be an event for the public to come in and learn about property taxes, how we calculate it, how we use it, what we spend it on, how we establish the property tax rates and all of that," Dunbar said.

Dunbar admitted there is a lot of talk about property tax on radio and in the news and that prompted the decision to hold this discussion. In addition, residents can learn what circuit breakers are, as well as other issues pertaining to taxes that people may have heard about.

"We want to work through that and help the taxpayer be a little more knowledgeable about the property tax issue and how it works and give them a little bit of a better understanding when they hear those things on the news. We will have a power point presentation, discuss how the city does increase taxes, growth and how it all works. It has been on the news every night, and we had been talking about it and decided we should have something with the public," Dunbar said.
