Moore's Bar and Grill to hold annual Moore's to Moore's 5K Saturday

The Moore's to Moore's 5K will be held Saturday, April 12.

An event aimed at remembering fallen family members, as well as giving back to students at Greencastle High School will be held this Saturday in Greencastle.

The Moore's to Moore's 5K will be held Saturday, April 12, at Moore's Bar and Grill, 17 S. Indiana Street, Greencastle. 

The event is $35 and features both a 5K event and a Kids 1K Fun Run, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. 

According to Pete Meyer, owner of Moore's Bar and Grill, the event originated out of a way for him to remember and honor his fallen parents, Mary Ann and Ed, who died in 2015. 

"It all started to have the road race as a way to fund a third scholarship. We have three scholarships at Greencastle High School and the first two are in the name of my parents. They passed about 10 years away, and then when Makenzie passed away, we started the third scholarship. They are all held in an endowment in Lakeland, Florida, at the community foundation. We decided we needed some extra funding and we started doing these road races. We had a couple of them in the fall and last year, we moved it to the spring and had a really good turnout. We are hoping Saturday is a big turnout. It is an evening race, it's going to be a cool perfect day for running," Meyer told The Putnam County Post. 

Meyer said the race will run through DePauw University's campus, through Robe-Ann Park, down Seminary Street past homes and fraternity homes before returning to Moore's. 

"If you want to, you can have a drink before the event, and if you are over 21, you get a free beer after," Meyer said. 

After starting the scholarships in honor of his parents, Meyer and his family opted to do another scholarship in honor of Mackenzie Meyer, daughter of Meyer's brother, Mike, and wife, Brenda. Almost a year and a half ago, Mike unexpectedly lost his life on the first day of school at Greencastle High School and the scholarship name was changed to the Mike and Mackenzie Meyer Scholarship. 

"It is the community involvement. We have almost 40 volunteers that are supporting this race, and a lot of friends and family that are coming down. My little brother is the title sponsor, and we a large group of sponsors from Greencastle, which says a lot about Mackenzie and Mike, and this is a way to remember them and also a way to get the community together. They tend to support a great cause, and we believe this is a great cause because it all goes back to the kids at Greencastle High School in terms of scholarship," Meyer said. 

Meyer said the scholarships will be handed out in May, and he admits he is surprised with how the event continues to grow each year. 

"It keeps getting bigger. We almost doubled it last year from the year before, and we just hope to keep growing it," Meyer said.
