Hendricks County law enforcement and the prosecutor's office report that after a thorough investigation, there was evidence of self-defense found in the case, and the prosecutor has declined criminal charges in this matter.
About 2 p.m. on June 2, Hendricks County deputies responded to the call of a person shot in Camby at the Walmart. A man was found wounded near a vehicle with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his torso. The wounded man, later identified as Matthew Steele, 34, of Indianapolis, was provided immediate medical attention and transported to an Indianapolis hospital where he was later died.
Deputies detained and questioned a 19 year old male who was involved in the incident. Preliminary reports indicated that there was a verbal and physical altercation between the men prior to a firearm being produced and fired.
