While the weather may not be an indicator, outdoor basketball is right around the corner in Greencastle and soon, there will be a Bankshot basketball court at Maple Berry Park.

According to Greencastle City Councilman Vincent Aguirre, who represents the Fourth Ward, a bankshot court has been approved and is moving forward for Maple Berry Park in his district. The court will be an innovative and inclusive facility designed for people of all ages and ability, promoting accessibility, active living and community engagement.

"The Bankshot Playcourt is a game changer for Greencastle. It is exciting for me to put this in Maple Berry Park, which is looking as good as it has during my time in Greencastle. It is a unique recreational activity that can bring more people and more investments to that area. Students at Ridpath can walk over and use it, and I hope churches and organizations use it. You can bring a toddler and shoot. You can be in a wheelchair and shoot, or you can be elderly and shoot. It is designed to be for all ages. I led this initiative because I believe our community deserves accessible and inclusive recreational sponsors," Aguirre told The Putnam County Post.

At this month's Greencastle City Council meeting, Aguirre told those in attendance Greencastle will have the first facility in the state and learned of the court during last year's NBA All-Star festivities in Indianapolis. The measure came with financial support from fellow councilmembers Stacie Langdon, Katherine Asbell, and Darrel Thomas.

"Their commitment to supporting inclusive recreational spaces has been instrumental in moving this project forward," Aguirre admitted.

Aguirre, who said he learned of the concept after a trip to Chicago, mentioned the investment will help Greencastle residents today and in the future.

"Investing in inclusive, recreational spaces not only benefits our residents today, but it also lays the foundation for a healthier, more connected community tomorrow," Aguirre said.

The court will feature a series of hoops at various heights, ranging from toddler friendly baskets to the traditional 10-foot regulation height. The court will also feature 10 rims, each designed with unique shapes and angles to create a fun environment, according to Aguirre.

"Bankshot courts are known for fostering social interaction, creativity and teamwork, making them a valuable addition to any community park. These playcourts are ADA compliant and promote non-aggressive, inclusionary play and ensures that everyone, regardless of physical ability or age, can participate and have fun. It is really good for everyone," Aguirre said.

As for a timeframe, Aguirre said it is "up in the air."

"The claims were processed for payment and the boards are in fabrication with a goal of delivering them this year. I do not how the installation process works and if it has to be a certain temperature, but I trust the parks department to get them installed when they are ready. If they are delivered this year, I can't imagine we won't have them installed in the spring or early summer. I'll be the first one out there, and maybe, we will have a block party. It is a fun, unique experience," Aguirre said.
