IndyStar Indiana Miss Basketball for 2025 is HSE's second Miss Basketball

Maya Makalusky has earned the top individual award in Indiana high school girls' basketball.

A 6-4 wing from Hamilton Southeastern High School, Makalusky has been named IndyStar Indiana Miss Basketball for 2025 in online voting of media and girls’ varsity coaches conducted by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and All-Star game director Mike Broughton, it was announced Wednesday (March 19).

The Miss Basketball result means Makalusky will wear the No. 1 jersey for the Indiana All-Stars in their annual series with Kentucky. The Miss Basketball award goes to the top girls’ basketball senior in the state. The Miss Basketball and Mr. Basketball awards are part of the IndyStar Indiana All-Star program that dates to 1939. The Miss Basketball award, along with the girls All-Stars, was added to the All-Star program in 1976.

The complete 2025 Girls' All-Star team was announced last Friday (March 14). The 2025 Mr. Basketball and the 2025 Boys' All-Star team also will be announced later. The 2025 girls' Junior All-Stars were announced on March 9. The boys' Junior All-Stars will be announced later.

Makalusky earned the girls' top honor after being named on 131 ballots submitted to Broughton in voting that ran from Feb. 17 to March 4. Jaylah Lampley of Lawrence Central was runner-up with 80 votes. Meredith Tippner of Noblesville placed third with 41 votes, and Addison Baxter of Columbia City was fourth with 30 votes. Sixteen other players received at least one vote for Miss Basketball. There were 384 votes cast overall.

Makalusky is the second Miss Basketball winner in HSE history, joining Sydney Parrish in 2020. She also is the fourth HSE player to wear No. 1 with the Royals' Gary Harris and Zak Irvin claiming Mr. Basketball accolades in 2012 and 2013, respectively. In addition, Makalusky is her program's eighth girls' and HSE's 13th overall Indiana All-Star. The girls' list includes Kahla Roudebush (2005), Courtney Osborn (2009), Taya Reimer (2013), Amaya Hamilton (2019), Parrish (2020), Olivia Brown (2023) and Riley Makalusky (2023). The boys' list includes Joe Reitz (2004), Harris (2012), Irvin (2013), Zach Gunn (2017) and Mabor Majak (2020).

An Indiana University recruit, Makalusky averaged 22.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.8 steals as a senior in leading Hamilton Southeastern to a 27-1 season that included Hall of Fame Classic, Hoosier Crossroads Conference, sectional and regional championships. That came after a junior season where she tallied 26.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals in keying the Royals to a 21-4 campaign. For her career, Makalusky totaled a school-record 1,933 points plus 487 rebounds, 139 assists, 138 steals and 64 blocked shots while HSE amassed an aggregate record of 83-16 over her four seasons (14-8, 21-3, 21-4 and 27-1). She also has a school record with 652 points in a season, which she achieved in 2023-24.

Makalusky recently was named the 2025 Gatorade Indiana Player of the Year and earlier was a nominee for the 2025 McDonald's All-American Game. She also is a three-time IBCA Supreme 15 All-State selection, a two-time ICGSA first-team All-State pick and a 2024 AP second-team All-State choice. In addition, she is a three-time first-team all-Hamilton County pick, a three-time first-team all-HCC selection and recently was chosen as the 2025 HCC girls' basketball Athlete of the Year.

Makalusky is the fourth Miss Basketball winner to go to IU out of high school. She joins Lori Meinerding of Fort Wayne Northrop (1987), Marla Inman of Bedford North Lawrence (1992) and Jorie Allen of Bedford North Lawrence (2019). Parrish, the 2020 Miss Basketball from HSE, started her college career at Oregon but has played the past three seasons at Indiana. Inman completed her career at Louisville, and Allen is completing her career this season at DePaul.

Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball traditionally wear No. 1 jerseys for the respective Indiana Boys All-Stars and Indiana Girls All-Stars in the annual series with Kentucky. The All-Stars will face the Indiana Junior All-Stars in an exhibition doubleheader on June 4 at Greenfield-Central High School. The All-Stars follow with their home-and-home doubleheaders with Kentucky -- June 6 at Lexington Catholic High School and June 7 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
