He may not have played the majority of the 2024 season, but the impact Cam Pingleton made on the Greencastle football team was felt immediately when he came back from injury this fall.
After battling an injury, Pingleton returned to the lineup just in time to help the Tiger Cubs (5-6) defeat North Putnam in the regular season finale. He has also played a major part in sectional wins over Pike Central and Brown County heading into tonight's contest against Linton-Stockton (9-2).
"Me being banged up taught me a lot. It taught me to be a leader to my teammates and to be disciplined. It felt amazing going back on the field. I would tell myself every game, "This is what you work for Cameron. Put it all on the field and play like it is your last." The first game back was against North Putnam, and I knew that I had to put myself out there. Against Pike Central, I got my teammates pumped up with a strip sack that set the tone. At that point, I knew I was back," Pingleton told The Putnam County Post.
Getting back out there and making plays is something Pingleton takes seriously, as he admits he is playing for a higher meaning each time he suits up for the Tiger Cubs.
"I take a lot of pride in my position. When me and (Brayden) Monroe came back, I knew the game was going to be a lot different. That drive comes from my brother. When he passed away, I knew I had to make him proud every play, and I would be really aggressive and try my hardest," said Pingleton, who has drawn attention from Southern Illinois and Bluffton.
Greencastle head coach Dave Stephens said the addition of Pingleton has been huge for his team.
"It has been a shame that he has had to play through his senior year battling injuries. Cam shows flashes, and I think he is second on our team in sacks and he has played two and a half games. He is so explosive and has opportunities to rush off the edge. To have him back at almost full health is huge for us and we are excited about the things he brings to us," Stephens said.
Tonight, the Tiger Cubs play a Linton-Stockton team that defeated Greencastle 46-14 on Sept. 28. Despite the loss, Pingleton comes into tonight excited and confident Greencastle can pull out a win.
"It would mean a lot to me to bring home a sectional title. This team is rewriting history for Greencastle," Pingleton said.
