Eagles overcame the remnants of Hurricane Helene to dismantle West Vigo, 32-0
Heading into Friday's contest against West Vigo, South Putnam head football coach Chuck Sorrell joked the Eagles always saw the unexpected each time they took on the Vikings.
And, Friday lived up to his expectations, as the Eagles overcame the remnants of Hurricane Helene to dismantle West Vigo, 32-0 in a game that was stopped when power was lost shortly before the half.
"They got a heavy dose of power. We really played well for almost two quarters. It was fun," Sorrell told GIANT fm WREB following the victory.
The Eagles wasted little time, imposing their will on West Vigo, as running back Ty Benton took a handoff and put South Putnam up 6-0 early. The two point conversion was successful, putting the Eagles (4-2, 2-1) ahead 8-0. Moments later, quarterback Wyatt Mullin hit Bryson Hanley for a score and got another touchdown from sophomore Keenan Mowery-Shields to go ahead 24-0. Following a fumble recovery by South Putnam, Benton scored his second touchdown of the night, putting the Eagles ahead 32-0.
With the win, South Putnam rolls into the final third of the regular season and with dates against Brown County, Owen Valley and Cloverdale looming, Sorrell admits his team needs to stay focused.
"You want to start your peak in week seven or eight. I really feel like we are hitting our stride with the run game. We are hitting on all cylinders at the right time. We have to prepare to beat them and that is where we are right now. We know we can beat Brown County, but we have to execute to beat Brown County," Sorrell said.
