February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month and Blue River Career Programs will be spotlighting its programs and a student from each program Monday through Friday in the Shelby County Post during the month of February.

The CTE spotlight today is Criminal Justice program student Cassandra Pike (photo), a first year Criminal Justice student and junior at Shelbyville High School.

In the fall, Pike received her 40-hour IAED ETC certification.  She also received six credit hours through Ivy Tech in Criminal Justice. this spring, Pike is planning to earn her 40-hour Jail Officer's Course certificate and six more Ivy Tech credit hours.

In class, she enjoys learning about the various court systems in the United States. In October, Pike toured the Shelby County Courthouse and Community Corrections and was able to see Shelby County government in action. She also appreciated the time various guest speakers gave, including courtroom personnel Judge David Riggins and attorneys Scott Spears and Rebecca Gray.

Some of the hands-on activities she enjoys are practicing her Use of Force and her Crime Scene Investigation skills.

Pike plans to attend Indiana University upon graduation. She wants to earn a bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Legal Studies. She also is interested in IU's pre-law program.

Her future plans include attending law school. Upon completion, she is interested in practicing Family or Criminal Law.
