February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month and Blue River Career Programs will be spotlighting its programs and a student from each program Monday through Friday in the Shelby County Post during the month of February.
Today's CTE spotlight is Work Based Learning.
Lily Kuhn (photo) was enrolled in Work Based Learning in 2017-2018 and BRCP’s Certified Nursing Assistant program in 2018-2019. She was a 2019 graduate of Shelbyville High School.
"BRCP helped me get experience in the healthcare field,” said Kuhn. “During my Work Based Learning class, I went to Major Hospital. This allowed me to follow RNs in many different areas of the hospital. I gained exposure to healthcare and was able to find out what areas I enjoyed.
“After completing my shadowing in the hospital, I then confirmed that I would like to go get my RN degree in college. In 2018, I started the CNA program where I was able to learn the basics of patient care and get an introduction into the nursing field. After I graduated high school, I was able to get a job in a nursing home and gain more experience while going to college to get my BSN.”
Kuhn quickly found out her BRCP experience was a key to her getting hired after graduation.
“After graduating with my BSN in 2023, I applied for RN jobs. My experience of working as a CNA in a nursing home and hospital helped me tremendously."
Kuhn would not hesitate to recommend BRCP to assist with an educational track.
"My advice would be to take advantage of these programs,” she said. “These programs can help you gain experience, meet and network with people in the career, and help you figure out if you could see yourself doing that career in the future. BRCP can help you get ahead of your peers and make you stand out from others."
