There is nothing quite like hearing that familiar buzzing sound of a spring invader as it navigates a flight pattern around your head while coming out of its hibernation from winter.
The sound is a mere aggravation, but some of the spring invaders can bite and if crushed can cause an acidic odor and yellowish stain on the items that it comes in contact with.
- Surprisingly the brown marmorated stink bug cannot bite, but the odor it produces, if disturbed or crushed, is not exactly a pleasing scent also leaving a stain.
- The multicolored Asian lady beetle on the other hand will bite in self-defense along with releasing a stinky odor from sacs at the base of their legs on the underneath side of the insect which can also leave a stain.
- Boxelder bugs are also one of those aggravating insects that can bite and release an “alarm” scent that is stinky to try to ward off predators.
All three of the spring invaders we have discussed are just using defense mechanisms that nature has provided them with for their survival. One good thing to know is that the bite or odor does not transmit any disease, but allergens that are produced by the insect can affect human allergies and even asthma.
Accurate information is very beneficial to the homeowner concerning spring invaders, but that is not where it all ends. The practical side of learning about the biology and interesting facts of these insects are cool bits of information for conversation but does not solve pest problems in your home.
This is where the rubber meets the road in helping homeowners with pest problems. Chemicals are not always the only answer in controlling these pests. Caulking or sealing entry points is always a good nonchemical method of control.
Some botanicals are good in repelling some insects, but ask yourself, “Do I want to just repel, or do I want them gone?”
Another action that can be taken is remove or modify the environment so that your home will not be attractive to spring invaders.
Finally, the use of pesticides safely administered by our professionals can be a great option for those who want a quick knock down that also has a residual killing action to protect your home.
