Motorists traveling on Interstate 465 on the southeast side of Indianapolis will now see changes to improve traffic flow and safety. 

Ramp metering has now been activated at multiple locations along the busy corridor.

Transportation Systems Management Operations (TSMO)

TSMO is a set of strategies that focuses on operational improvements to maximize the efficiency and safety of existing transportation systems. TSMO is a proven tool to improve traffic flow, especially in urban areas where additional space may be limited. 

The I-465 SE TSMO project is using TSMO strategies to promote smoother travel and improved safety. The corridor experiences congestion during peak travel times, which results in high crash rates.  Improvements include ramp metering, a variable speed limit (VSL) system, and dynamic message signs (DMSs).

What to Expect

Ramp meters will be in use on I-465 between I-65 and I-70 during peak travel times. Ramp metering controls the frequency of vehicles entering the roadway to match traffic capacity by installing traffic signals at on-ramps. The system is expected to be in use later this month. 

_x000D_ When the meter is in use, the signal located on both sides of the ramp will cycle between red and green to indicate to motorists when to merge. _x000D_ When the light turns green, one car will merge onto I-465 at a time. _x000D_ The next vehicle on the ramp will wait until the red light turns green again.  _x000D_ When the meter is not in use, the signal will flash yellow, and merging will resume as normal. _x000D_ If the ramp gets full while the meter is in use, the signal will adapt to traffic conditions and increase the rate at which the signal will allow the vehicles to proceed forward onto I-465.  _x000D_ Watch this short video for a step-by-step ramp metering demonstration.  _x000D_

Traffic signals are installed at each ramp meter location. They are expected to flash yellow for several days prior to activation to help prepare drivers for the change. Expect to see the signals begin flashing yellow the week of April 29. Ramp metering is expected to begin on or after May 6. 

Variable speed limits (VSLs) are expected to be introduced in the coming weeks. Digital speed limit signs will be posted every half mile on both sides of I-465. Speed limits will be increased or decreased by five miles per hour to match traffic conditions. This will help reduce crashes and improve safety. The speed limit will be adjusted based on congestion, roadway incidents, work zones and inclement weather.  

Additional dynamic message signs (DMSs) will also be in use on the corridor. The electronic signs will provide drivers on the I-465 SE corridor with real-time traffic alerts and information to improve their commute. DMSs provide clear and immediate messages to drivers about road conditions, traffic situations and weather conditions.
