SCS board approves parking lot paving bid for Shelbyville High School and Shelbyville Middle School

Shelbyville High School’s parking lots will get a full makeover this summer.

The Shelbyville Central Schools board held a special meeting Thursday morning to award a paving contract to Dave O’Mara Contractor, Inc. based in North Vernon, Indiana.

The nearly $1.8 million contract will include repaving and striping all the parking lot areas at Shelbyville High School and the parking lot areas at Shelbyville Middle School that were not repaved in the summer of 2023.

The Dave O’Mara bid was one of five bids the school board entertained. The goal is to have all the work completed before the start of the 2024-2025 school year in early August.

The project will be paid for with 2023 GO (General Obligation) bond money currently on hand, according to Shelbyville Central Schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Vance.

“Our thought is, go forward with this, this will take care of lots at the high school and the middle school for years to come,” said Vance. “We get on a basic maintenance schedule where we are crack filling and sealing every few years to keep those up to par. We think this is a good investment going forward.”

In other board business Thursday morning, the personnel report was approved and included two physical education teachers switching buildings.

Long-time Shelbyville Middle School physical education teacher Scott Fitzgerald is moving over to the high school in the same role. Fitzgerald is Shelbyville’s varsity football head coach.

Spencer Hessman, who just completed his first year as a physical education teacher at Shelbyville High School, will move to the middle school in the same role.

Also, Coulston Elementary School teacher Beth Small is transferring to Loper Elementary School to replace retiring fifth-grade teacher Lisa Lee.
