Shelbyville hires new girls varsity basketball coach

Kylie Weichman is Shelbyville High School’s new girls varsity basketball coach.

Weichman’s hiring was approved Tuesday morning at a special Shelbyville Central Schools board meeting. She has more than a decade of junior varsity coaching experience at Columbus East.

“I think it is an excellent opportunity. I am really excited. I love the gym. I love the student atmosphere when I came with Columbus East. There is a great supportive administration. I am really excited about this opportunity,” said Weichman Tuesday morning.

Weichman was formally meeting with the Shelbyville roster today in preparation for a busy month of June.

“We’ve got to hit the ground running and we plan to do so,” she said. “We hit Indiana Wesleyan camp with the varsity on Friday. Next week, we continue practice then head to East Central the weekend after Father’s Day.

“The practice time is great because it gives us an opportunity to start to implement some new things, some changes. I really want to take today, the first day of practice to observe and watch the girls and see how they like to work in the gym.”

Shelbyville finished 14-11 last season without a senior on the roster. That experience should help with the transition to a new coach.

“That is really fortunate. I am excited the continuity the girls and (junior varsity coach Ben Sprinkle) bring to the program,” said Weichman. “I hope to establish just a few things I am passionate about if they are not already in place. My first days here will be observing a lot and getting to know everyone and developing those relationships which are vitally important to our success.”

Weichman is replacing Becca Hoefler, who resigned last month to become the new girls varsity basketball coach at Avon. In six seasons with the Golden Bears, Hoefler was 67-75. In her final three seasons, the program went 44-28.

Weichman, who has a 1-year-old son named Cohen, works for Pearson Higher Education and will not be joining the teaching staff at Shelbyville High School.

“It’s always been my goal to become a varsity basketball coach,” said Weichman. “In 2023, (head coach) Danny Brown retired from Columbus East, so I stepped away from basketball after that. I am excited to be back and really looking forward to getting a staff in place and working with the girls and accomplishing really good things.”
