The end goal for Birpartap Saini is to build a bigger convenience store at the corner of Miller and Colescott streets in Shelbyville.
For that to happen, Saini needed to get additional property located behind his Valero Gas Station rezoned to Business General.
On Monday at City Hall, the Plan Commission forwarded a favorable recommendation to the Shelbyville Common Council to rezone 713 S. Miller St. from Single Family Residential (R-1) to Business General.
Saini, operating under the company name K&B Partners LLC, stated he wants to construct a larger convenience store on the property to better serve the local community.
There were traffic and safety concerns brought up about the busy intersection at Miller and Colescott streets with the Shelbyville Boys and Girls Club and Girls Inc. located just south of the location.
Plan Commission member Denny Harrold stated that the petition before the commission Monday was just to rezone the adjacent property. No site plan has been submitted for a larger convenience store.
Traffic and safety concerns could be addressed more thoroughly at that time.
The Miller St. rezone will need final approval from the Common Council, which next meets on Sept. 4 at 6 p.m.
