Edward M. “Sonny” Shaw, 94, of Boggstown, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born October 18, 1928, in Boggstown, the son of James Roy and Edith Mae (McBurnette) Shaw.  On September 3, 1950, he married his wife of 72 years, Margaret Ann “Peggy” (Reilly) Shaw, and she survives.

In addition to Peggy, Sonny is survived by his children, Sandra Jo Brumfiel and husband, Raymond, of Dugger, James Edward Shaw and wife, Joni, of Elizabethtown, Timothy Gordon “Tim” Shaw and wife, Sandy, of Columbus, and Debbie Shaw of Boggstown; brothers, John Michael Shaw and wife, Darlene, of Boggstown, David Shaw and wife, Gail, of Lake Havasu, Nevada, George Shaw and wife, Dede, of Forest Hill, California, and Raymond Wells and wife, Melody, of Lewis Creek; sisters, Eileen Anderson of Rancho Cordova, California, Donna Bowers of Anderson, and Sarah Holt and husband, Glenn, of St. Paul; grandchildren, Joshua Brumfiel and wife, Lisa, Jessica Hart and husband, Justin, Peter Shaw, Andrew Shaw, Allison Shaw, Melissa Staley and husband, Tom, Mallorie Bailey and husband, Joe, and Harrison Shaw and wife, Emily; great-grandchildren, Ronin Rudd, Soren Staley, Arlo Staley, Leland Staley, Olivia Hart, Hannah Hart, Landon Hart, Samuel Brumfiel, Bria Brumfiel, Macie Bailey, Madeleine Bailey and Edward Shaw; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Roy Shaw and Milton Townsend Shaw; and sisters, Emma Ruth Reed, Mary Jo Yancy, Jimmie Mae Engle and Carol Ann McKinney.

In 1946, Sonny graduated from Boggstown High School. He attended Indiana University, where he was a member of the gymnastics team until being called to serve his country.

He served in the U.S. Army, during World War II and the Korean Conflict, and achieved the rank of Sergeant.

Sonny was an active member of the Boggstown Presbyterian Church.

He worked for General Electric and a first class licensed engineer for WSVL.  Sonny retired from Bryant Manufacturing in 1990, with over 30 years of service.

Sonny was also a member of the Sugar Creek Lodge No. 279 F&AM for over 50 years, and held a first class amateur radio license call sign W9ZBR.

He was a private pilot and enjoyed woodworking.

Visitation will be from 11 am to 1 pm, Monday, July 10, 2023, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Masonic services will begin at 1 pm on Monday.  Funeral services will follow with Pastor Sandi Martin officiating.

Interment will be at Boggstown Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the local military committee.
