Margaret L. Payne, 100, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Waldron Healthcare.
She was born in Indianapolis on January 23, 1924, to Gurney J. and Bessie M. (Carroll) Swain. She graduated from Morristown High School in 1942. She married Maynard C. Payne on November 9, 1942, in Fountaintown, and he preceded her in death in July of 1994.
She worked as a secretary for Indiana Employment Security Division for over 25 years before retiring in 1990.
Margaret belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #73 in Shelbyville, the White Shrine of Jerusalem #12, Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville.
She loved playing the organ and piano. During her senior year of high school, she won a state typing competition. She loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by children, Ginny (Stephen) Aldridge of Shelbyville, Manarda (Steve) Abel of Fountaintown, Brad (significant other Pam Payne) Payne of Waldron, Sara E. (Butch) Yonts of Morristown, and Michael A. (companion Cindy Garrett) Payne of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Desiree, Scott, Brett, Laurie, Nesha, Roddy, Zandria, B.J., Brandy, Deon, Brandon, and Dustin; numerous great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband Maynard; son, Maynard “Doc” Payne; sister, Ginny Wilson; brother-in-law, Jim Wilson; and grandson, David Adkins.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at First United Methodist Church, 34 W. Washington St., Shelbyville, IN 46176.
A funeral service will follow the visitation at 1:00 pm.
Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church or a charity for dementia. Envelopes will be available at the church.
