Paul David Douglas, 93, of Flat Rock, and most recently Ashford Place Health Campus in Shelbyville, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at Franciscan St. Francis in Indianapolis.
He was born July 11, 1930 to Edwin and Bernece Talkington Douglas in the log cabin in Noble Township where Edwin was born. His sister, Mary Louise was born in 1935.
Paul graduated from Waldron High School in 1948 and in 1952 from Purdue University. He served in the Army as a 1st Lieutenant Transportation Officer in Korea for two years. After his military service he came back to Noble Township to farm with his father. In 1958 he married Judith Joan John, of Union Township. They had three children, Carol Alice, Joyce Annette, and John David.
Part of their farming operation included a large egg production enterprise of 50,000 layers producing over a million dozen eggs a year. Edwin Douglas and Son farmed together until Edwin retired in 1973. Paul and Judy got out of egg production in the mid-1980’s. John graduated from Purdue in 1990 and came home to farm with his dad. The chicken houses were converted to a hog operation. Paul retired when he was 65.
Paul served on the Ohio Valley Egg Co-op Board, the Shelby Eastern School Board, the Blue River Vocational Board, the Shelby County Plan Commission, the Board of Zoning Appeals, was a 4-H Leader, was a member of the Shelby County Pork Producers, was a Farm Bureau Poultry Representative for many years, and has been a member of the Lewis Creek Baptist Church for 76 years serving in various positions in the church.
Paul is survived by his wife Judy, daughters Carol (David) Lee of Indianapolis and Joyce (Jerry) Fletcher of Knox, son John (Monica) Douglas of Flat Rock, his sister Mary Louise (Charles) Richardson of Zionsville, 10 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 6 step-great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm, Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville and from 9 to 10 am, Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at Lewis Creek Baptist Church, 1400 E. 600 S., Waldron.
Funeral services will follow at 10 am, Wednesday, at the church, with Pastors David Lee and Harvey Taylor officiating.
Burial at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, 3200 E County Road 1100 S, Flat Rock, IN, with military graveside rites conducted by the local military committee.
