Class 2A, No. 13 Triton Central gave up a late touchdown but recovered Indianapolis Scecina's onside kick to seal a hard-fought 19-16 victory Friday night at Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis.
Sam Collier threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns and Bo West rushed for nearly 100 yards to improve Triton Central to 5-2. And with Indianapolis Lutheran’s 49-14 win over Monrovia, the Tigers are now tied with both programs atop the ICC standings at 4-1.
Triton Central built a 16-0 lead by halftime even with a Scecina interception at the goalline that denied the Tigers points on the game’s opening drive.
Collier connected with Zeke Robertson for a 7-yard touchdown late in the first quarter. It was Robertson’s sixth touchdown reception of the season.
A Cooper Marlin interception got the Tigers the ball right back and Collier connected with Braden Brown for a 14-yard scoring strike. The extra point kick was missed by Nicholas Tormoehlen.
However, Tormoehlen returned to the field late in the second quarter and delivered a 37-yard field goal for a 16-0 lead.
The Crusaders (2-5, 2-3 ICC) got on the scoreboard early in the third quarter when Collier was sacked and fumbled. Eric Montgomery scooped up the loose ball and raced to the end zone. The 2-point pass attempt conversion failed.
The scored remained 16-6 the rest of the third quarter. Owen Weinzierl made a 19-yard field goal to start the fourth quarter to get the Crusaders within a touchdown, 16-9.
Collier connected with Cael Butler on a 48-yard pass play that put Triton Central in a first-and-goal situation but the Tigers had to settle for a Tormoehlen 25-yard field goal to make it 19-9 with 8:15 left on the scoreboard clock.
Clifford Brown completed a short jump pass to Dominic McKiernan with 31 seconds left to cut the lead to 19-16 and set up an onside kick attempt that ultimately failed.
Triton Central returns home for its final two games of the regular season against Beech Grove (4-3, 3-2) and Speedway (4-3, 3-2).
