Collegiate Update: Mathies, DePauw headed to NCAA Division III Tournament

With hits in all five games, Katie Mathies helped DePauw softball win the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in Greencastle, Indiana.

The Tigers opened the postseason tournament Thursday with an 8-0 win over Wittenberg. Mathies, a Shelbyville graduate, had a single, two walks and drove in two runs.

DePauw returned to the field Thursday and lost to Hiram, 3-1. Mathies had two hits and a walk.

In an elimination game Friday, DePauw defeated Denison, 5-1. Mathies had a single, a walk, scored two runs and drove in a run.

DePauw then defeated Hiram, 12-5, to set up a winner-takes-all championship game Sunday. Mathies had a single, stolen base, scored a run and drove in a run.

In the championship, Mathies had two hits including a solo home run, scored two runs and had three RBI in DePauw’s 10-8 victory over Hiram.

The tournament title was the seventh in program history for the Tigers and earned them an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

Mathies’ performance earned her a spot on the NCAC All-Tournament Team.

DePauw will serve as the host site for a four-team NCAA regional beginning Thursday. The Tigers (28-14-1) will face St. Mary’s (Minn.) (31-9) in their first game of the double-elimination regional.

The other two teams competing will be Coe (31-9) and Baldwin Wallace (25-14).

Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level.

Karissa Hamilton

The Shelbyville graduate went 0-for-3 at the plate Tuesday in Kentucky’s 7-2 loss to Ole Miss in the opening game of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 30-22 this season.

On Sunday, Kentucky learned it will head to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to compete in one of 16 NCAA regional tournaments. The Wildcats will face Michigan Friday with the winner advancing to face either Oklahoma State or Northern Colorado.

Kylee Edwards

The Shelbyville graduate went 0-for-2 in her SEC Tournament debut Wednesday in Mississippi State’s 8-4 loss to South Carolina.

The Bulldogs are 33-18 and headed West for the NCAA Tournament.

On Sunday, Mississippi State was assigned to the Stanford Regional in Palo Alto, California. The Bulldogs open the tournament Friday against Cal State Fullerton. The those teams met in February at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic where Mississippi State prevailed 4-2.

The winner advances to face with Stanford or Saint Mary’s (Calif.).

Cory Taylor

The Shelbyville graduate had a single, two walks, scored two runs and drove in a run Friday for Eastern Michigan in a 10-9 win over Bowling Green.

Taylor had three hits Saturday in a 7-1 loss to the Mid-American Conference regular season champs.

Bowling Green won the series Sunday with an 8-6 victory.

The Eagles dropped to 14-34 this season and 9-18 in the MAC standings.
