Collegiate Update: Mathies helps DePauw extend win streak to 10 straight

Katie Mathies had six hits in four DePauw victories that extended the Tigers’ win streak to 10 straight.

On Wednesday at Kenyon, the Shelbyville graduate had two hits including a double and drove in three runs in a 9-1 victory in game one of a doubleheader. She had a double and two runs batted in for DePauw in a 9-0 win in game two.

DePauw stayed unbeaten against North Coast Athletic Conference competition Saturday with 7-4 and 3-0 wins over Wittenberg. Mathies had a single in each game.

The Tigers are 18-10 overall and 10-0 against NCAC schools.

Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level.

Kylee Edwards

The Shelbyville graduate reached base five times Sunday in a doubleheader at the University of Oklahoma.

After going hitless Friday in Mississippi State’s 4-0 loss to the Sooners, she had two hits and three walks in 6-5 and 9-6 losses Sunday.

The Bulldogs are 33-14 (9-9 SEC).

Abby Eberhardt

The Triton Central graduate had a pinch-hit single Wednesday that tied the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at 6-all with Anderson.

The Spartans prevailed 7-6 to split the HCAC doubleheader with the Ravens.

Manchester is 14-10 this season and 5-5 against HCAC competition.

Erica Henry

The Shelbyville graduate helped IU Columbus win three games in West Virginia.

After losing 6-1 Thursday in game one of a doubleheader at West Virginia University Institute of Technology, the Crimson Pride responded with a 5-3 win with Henry pitching a complete game in game two.

The two teams played again Saturday with IU Columbus winning both, 7-0 and 5-3. Henry was the winning pitcher in both games, allowing three hits and no runs in six innings in the opener, and eight hits and three runs in 6.1 innings in game two.

IU Columbus is 15-25 (12-16 River States Conference).

Cheyenne Eads

The Shelbyville graduate is 18-10 this season after a busy week pitching for the University of Indianapolis.

On Tuesday against Thomas More, Eads hit her first career home run and earned the save in an 8-4 win in game one of a doubleheader. In game two, she had three hits and pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn the win in a 7-6 victory.

The Greyhounds traveled to Ashland Wednesday and swept a doubleheader, 5-2 and 2-1. She allowed six hits and struck out six in game one to earn the win. She collected the save in game two, pitching 2.2 innings and striking out four.

Eads was the winning pitcher in game one Friday with Truman. She allowed two hits and struck out seven in a 10-2 win. Truman won game two, 8-6. Eads took the loss after allowing five hits and six runs in 1.2 innings.

Indianapolis is 33-19 overall and 15-11 in conference games.

Charlie Rife

The Shelbyville graduate went 0-for-2 with a walk on April 15 in Bellarmine’s 13-3 loss at Tennessee.

On Thursday, Rife reached based three times (two walks, hit by pitch) and scored three runs in a 15-5 win at the University of North Alabama.

The Knights lost the final two games of the series, 4-2 and 11-1, to fall to 10-29 (6-12 Atlantic Sun).

Oliver Gearlds and Asher Caldwell

Gearlds, a Triton Central graduate, and Caldwell, a Morristown graduate, each shot 9-over-par 80 on April 15 in the A.C. Eddy Spring Classic at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Indiana.

Gearlds posted the second-best score for IU Kokomo.

Caldwell played for a Trine squad that finished third overall.

Madalyn Hudnall

The Waldron graduate won the javelin competition Friday at the Centre Twilight meet.

Hudnall, competing for Mount St. Joseph, had a best throw of 122 feet, 11 inches to win the event. She also finished third in the hammer throw (135-11).

Rose-Hulman Invitational

A quartet of Shelby County graduates competed for Franklin College Friday at the Rose-Hulman Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Bailey Stamper

The Triton Central graduate placed 11th in the shot put (8.79 meters), 19th in the discus (22.78 meters) and 14th in the hammer throw (30.9 meters).

Brayden Wilkins

The Triton Central graduate finished fourth in the 100 meters (10.96 seconds) and was part of Franklin’s 400 relay team that finished seventh (43.8 seconds).

Elijah von Werder

The Shelbyville graduate crossed the finish line in the 800 in 2:09.35 to place 31st overall.

Connor Duncan

The Shelbyville graduate finished 23rd in the hammer throw with a best throw of 28.13 meters.
