Four Shelby County cross country runners returned to Blue River Memorial Park Saturday to compete in the season-opening Franklin Invitational.
The event was hosted by Franklin College and featured collegiate cross country teams from across the Great Lakes region.
Shelbyville graduate Michael Fox produced the best finish of the foursome, placing 114th for Manchester University, in the men’s race in 27 minutes, 56 seconds.
Franklin College has two former Golden Bears on its roster. Elijah Von Werder finished 318th in 37:42, four seconds ahead of teammate and former Golden Bear Tristin Maloney (37:46).
Shelbyville graduate Hannah Wright (photo) competed in her first collegiate event for St. Mary-of-the-Woods and finished 167th in 28:15.

Brooklyn Schiffli
The Triton Central graduate had 10 assists and 12 digs Saturday in Jacksonville State’s 22-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-14 win over the University of North Florida in the final match of the Islanders Classic, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Gamecocks opened the event Friday with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-13 win over Texas Southern University. Schiffli had four assists, two service aces and 19 digs.
Jacksonville State suffered its first loss of the season in its next match. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi swept the Gamecocks, 25-15, 27-25, 25-22. Schiffli collected five assists, one ace and 13 digs.
Jacksonville State is 5-1 this season.
Maggie Schweitzer
The Triton Central graduate helped Hanover volleyball win three matches at the Pam Briggs Classic, hosted by Capital University.
The Panthers opened the event Friday with a 17-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 win over Capital. Schweitzer had one kill, 24 assists and seven digs.
On Saturday, Hanover needed four sets to defeat Otterbein University, 14-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-19. Schweitzer finished with one kill, 12 assists, three aces and three digs.
Hanover then improved to 6-0 to start the season with a 25-11, 25-6, 25-23 win over Bethany College. Schweitzer collected 18 assists, two aces and six digs.
Hayden Kermode and Brayden Wilkins
Franklin College football opened its season Saturday with a 45-7 loss at Ohio Northern.
Kermode, a Triton Central graduate, had five solo tackles and nine total tackles — second most on the team — for Franklin.
Wilkins, also a Triton Central graduate, had five kickoff returns for Franklin College in his collegiate debut. Wilkins amassed 125 total return yards with a long return of 28 yards.
