Collegiate Update: Sanders, IU Kokomo defeat pair of top-10 ranked volleyball teams

Indiana University Kokomo's volleyball team upset the top-ranked and defending NAIA national champions Friday on their home court.

IU Kokomo, ranked No. 16 nationally, opened the 2024 season Thursday with an 18-25, 25-22, 29-27, 25-14 win over No. 6 Midland University at the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational in Marion, Indiana.

Triton Central graduate Julia Sanders collected three assists and eight digs in the win for IU Kokomo.

The Cougars followed that win Thursday with a quick 25-7, 25-12, 25-10 victory over Wilberforce University (Ohio).

 

 

On day two of the invitational, IU Kokomo battled for five sets with the host Wildcats inside Luckey Arena before prevailing, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 17-25, 15-13 to score the program’s first ever win over a No. 1 ranked opponent.

Indiana Wesleyan returns most of its roster from an undefeated 2023 team that won the national title.

Sanders (photo) had 14 digs Friday to improve the Cougars to 3-0.

In the invitational finale, Grace College defeated IU Kokomo, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 30-28. Sanders finished with one assist and 12 digs.
