Collegiate Update: Schweitzer directs Hanover volleyball to 11-0 start

A perfect 4-0 run through its invitational has Hanover volleyball off to an 11-0 start to the season.

The Panthers won all four matches in the Hanover Invitational in four sets.

On Friday, Hanover opened with a 25-16, 25-22, 24-26, 25-18 win over Blackburn College. Maggie Schweitzer, a Triton Central graduate, led the Panthers with one kill, 18 assists, seven service aces and 13 digs.

Hanover then defeated Rhodes College, 25-21, 25-12, 22-25, 25-21. Schweitzer finished with two kills, 14 assists, three aces and 10 digs.

On Saturday, Hanover topped Trine University, 25-16, 20-25, 25-22, 25-15. Schweitzer dominated with two kills, 20 assists, 10 aces and five digs.

The Panthers closed out the invitational with a 25-14, 25-17, 21-25, 25-14 win over Kenyon College. Schweitzer collected three kills, 19 assists, three aces and seven digs.

Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level.

Brooklyn Schiffli

The Triton Central graduate collected 62 digs in three five-set matches for Jacksonville State at the University of North Alabama Tournament in Florence, Alabama.

Jacksonville State lost its opener Friday to the University of Alabama-Birmingham, 25-23, 25-17, 18-25, 22-25, 15-12. Schiffli finished with six assists, two aces and a team-high 26 digs.

The Gamecocks followed that with another five-set loss to Arkansas State, 23-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-7. Schiffli had one kill, three assists, one ace and 20 digs.

On Saturday, Jacksonville State defeated the host school 14-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-25, 15-13. Schiffli was credited with one kill, two assists, two aces and 16 digs.

Jacksonville State is 7-3 this season.

Julia Sanders

The Triton Central graduate helped IU Kokomo volleyball finish 3-0 in its own invitational.

The Cougars opened the event Friday with a 25-20, 16-25, 25-14, 25-15 win over Campbellsville University. Sanders had one ace and six digs.

On Saturday, IU Kokomo started the day with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-17 victory over the University of the Cumberlands. Sanders finished with three assists and six digs.

The Cougars then bested St. Xavier University (Illinois), 25-12, 25-15, 25-19. Sanders had one assist, one ace and four digs.

IU Kokomo, ranked No. 10 nationally, improved to 8-4.

Oliver Gearlds

The Triton Central graduate finished tied for 40th for IU Kokomo at the Players Club Invitational in Muncie, Indiana.

Gearlds shot rounds of 82, 82 and 78 to finish at 242 (+26) for IU Kokomo, who finished sixth in the team standings.

Axel Conover

The Shelbyville graduate made his collegiate debut for Hanover College Saturday in a 53-0 loss at Butler University in Indianapolis.

Conover was credited with one tackle in the loss.

Hayden Kermode and Brayden Wilkins

Franklin College lost at Hope Saturday, 48-6, to start the football season 0-2.

Kermode, a Triton Central graduate, was credited with five tackles. Wilkins, also a Triton Central graduate, averaged 20 yards per return on five kickoff returns.

Tristin Maloney

The Shelbyville graduate finished 70th overall (29 minutes, 31 seconds) Saturday for Franklin College at the Hanover Invitational.

Franklin won the men’s team title.

Ellie Simpson

The Shelbyville graduate was credited with an assist on IU East’s only goal Wednesday in a 4-1 loss at Anderson University.

Simpson played 25 minutes in the loss.

IU East is 0-5-2 this season.

Vivian Blye

The Triton Central graduate had one shot on goal in 12 minutes of playing time for Huntington Thursday in a 4-0 win over Grace Christian.

Huntington is 5-1-2 this season.
