Collegiate Update: Shelbyville graduate makes collegiate swimming debut for Wabash

Will Rife made his collegiate swimming debut on Oct. 12 for Wabash College.

Wabash opened its 2024-25 season at the Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate Meet at Purdue University. The event featured Division I, Division II and Division III programs.

Rife, a Shelbyville graduate, finished 33rd in the 50-yard freestyle (23.44 seconds) and 37th in the 100 freestyle (52.39).

Rife also teamed with Grayson Goff, Brody Page and Nicholas Plumb to finish 17th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.07).

The Little Giants returned to the natatorium Saturday at Rose-Hulman to compete in the Indiana DIII Invitational.

Rife placed 15th in the 100 backstroke (1:00.23), 16th in the 50 free (23.56) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (56.09). He also was part of the sixth-place finishing 200 medley relay team (1:41.67).

Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level.

Brooklyn Schiffli

The Triton Central graduate had four assists, one service ace and 11 digs Saturday in Jacksonville State’s 25-16, 25-20, 25-17 loss to the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP).

On Friday, UTEP defeated the Gamecocks, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23. Schiffli had two assists, one ace and 10 digs.

Jacksonville State is 7-16 this season and 0-10 against Conference USA opponents.

Maggie Schweitzer

The Triton Central graduate finished with 22 assists, one ace and 12 digs Saturday for Hanover volleyball in a 22-25, 25-10, 25-16, 16-25, 15-13 win over Ohio Wesleyan.

On Friday, Hanover lost at Earlham College, 17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-23. Schweitzer collected 23 assists, two aces and 10 digs.

Hanover is 17-5 (1-2 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference).

Julia Sanders

The Triton Central graduate had one ace and four digs for No. 11 Indiana University Kokomo Saturday in a 25-21, 25-20, 25-15 win at Midway University. The win was the 16th straight for the Cougars (23-4, 10-0 River States Conference).

On Friday, IU Kokomo defeated IU Southeast, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18. Sanders had three digs.

Ella Rice

The Southwestern graduate had two assists Wednesday in Anderson volleyball’s win Wednesday at Asbury, 22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-6.

The Ravens are 14-4 (2-1 HCAC).

Oliver Gearlds

The Triton Central graduate finished tied for eighth place at the Holy Cross Invite held at Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Indiana.

Gearlds, representing IU Kokomo, carded rounds of 79 and 75 for a two-day score of 154 (+13).

IU Kokomo was runner-up in the team standings with a 624 (319-305). Bethel won the event (588).

Hayden Kermode and Brayden Wilkins

The Triton Central graduates helped Franklin College produce a 49-0 victory Saturday at Manchester University.

Kermode was credited with three tackles, including one tackle for loss.

Wilkins had three rushing attempts that netted 44 yards. His longest run was 24 yards.

Franklin is 2-4 (1-1 HCAC).

Michael Fox

The Shelbyville graduate placed 282nd overall for Manchester cross country at the Interregional Invitational Saturday hosted by Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.

Fox completed the race held at Saukie Golf Course in 27 minutes, 20 seconds.

Rebecca Valdez and Cyanne St. Bernard

The Shelbyville graduates combined for four shots Thursday in IU Columbus’ 4-0 loss at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Valdez played 68 minutes in the loss. Bernard had two shots on goal in 90 minutes of playing time.

On Saturday, Oakland City shut out IU Columbus, 7-0.

IU Columbus is 2-10-1 (0-7 RSC).
