Riley Everette will swim in the fourth of five heats of the 100-yard butterfly Friday at the 51st Annual Girls Swimming and Diving State Finals.
The state championship meet will be held in downtown Indianapolis at the Indiana University Natatorium. The preliminary round of races starts at 6 p.m.
The top 16 finishers in each event Friday will return Saturday afternoon for consolation and state championship races.
There will be 35 competitors in the 100 butterfly Friday. Everette, a junior at Shelbyville, is seeded 23rd in the field. Her sectional runner-up time of 57.01 seconds — a new school record — is the eighth fastest time in her heat.
Also competing in heat four will be Harrison (West Lafayette) senior Alexandra Evans (56.68), Mt. Vernon freshman Peyton McDaniel (55.45), Carmel senior Lynsey Bowen (55.17), Fishers sophomore Emily Wolf (52.66), Mooresville junior Lylah Theriac (54.58), Center Grove junior Addyson Matern (55.22) and Westfield freshman Evelyn West (56.22).
The top seed in the event is Carmel senior Alexandra Shackell (50.68). She is the state record holder (50.25) and is the reigning state champion in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.
Shackell qualified for Team USA in 2024 and competed in three events at the Paris Olympics. She was part of two gold-medal winning relay teams — the 4x100 freestyle and 4x200 freestyle — and placed sixth in the 200 butterfly.
