Shelbyville volleyball is the first of five sports to make its postseason debut this year in Class 3A. Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) realignment dropped the Golden Bears from 4A to 3A in volleyball, boys and girls basketball, baseball and softball.
On Sunday, the IHSAA announced the sectional pairings for 399 participating schools in the 53rd Annual Volleyball State Tournament that will culminate with the crowning of four state champions on Nov. 9 at Worthen Arena at Ball State University in Muncie.
Sectional tournaments begin Oct. 15 and continue through Oct. 19 at 64 sites across four enrollment classifications.
Two regional championship matches will be played in a doubleheader format at the same site on Oct. 26 with each winner advancing to a four-team semistate on Nov. 2.
Shelbyville will complete in Class 3A, Sectional 28 at Roncalli High School. The Golden Bears (5-19) will open the postseason against Rushville (9-17). The two programs have not met this season.
The winner will face the winner of the Beech Grove vs. unbeaten and top-ranked Roncalli (26-0) in the semifinal round.
The opening quarterfinal match at the sectional pits New Palestine against Greenwood with the winner advancing to face Indian Creek in the semifinals.
Triton Central travels to Indianapolis Scecina for Class 2A, Sectional 43.
The host Crusaders (20-6) open the sectional against KIPP Indy Legacy. The winner moves on to face Christel House in the semifinal found.
The other two quarterfinal round matches are Heritage Christian (9-13) against Triton Central (15-8) and Irvington Prep and Eastern Hancock (20-6). The winners return to Scecina for a semifinal match.
Morristown, Southwestern and Waldron all travel to North Decatur for Class A, Sectional 59.
Morristown (11-15) opens the eight-team sectional against Edinburgh (1-23). The winner will return to take on the winner of Tri and Knightstown.
The other quarterfinal bracket has Waldron (3-20) battling North Decatur (12-11) and South Decatur (22-4) facing Southwestern (15-12). The winners meet in the semifinal round.
