JLA Hide the Shine wins Julie Veltman Overnight Stakes at Horseshoe Indianapolis

Sometimes it only takes one step. That's exactly what JLA Hide the Shine needed to snag the win from Sin Tachas Secret at the wire Thursday in the $34,000 Julie Veltman Overnight Stakes at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

The race is named in honor of the state’s all-time leading female Quarter Horse jockey, Julie Veltman, who retired with several records during her career in Indiana.

JLA Hide the Shine and Alberto Ceron began from post eight and had a good break from the gate and were in contention with several other horses in the early stages of the 350-yard dash. As the wire neared, Sin Tachas Secret and Martin Munoz moved out for a short lead but was challenged on both sides in the final strides, including JLA Hide the Shine on the outside.

JLA Hide the Shine was able to put a nose ahead in one final surge to score the win in a time of 17.884 seconds, just a head in front of Sin Tachas Secret. Immediate and Diego Villamil Bocanegra finished another neck back on the far outside in third.

Immediate is trained by Veltman’s daughter Tasha Perez.

JLA Hide the Shine paid $11.00 for the win. The three-year-old daughter of Mr Piloto earned her third win of 2024. It was her first stakes win in her 13th career start. The Louisiana-bred filly began in Louisiana before moving to the Hector Sanchez barn to begin her three-year-old campaign. She now has more than $55,000 on her card for owner Chester Kight.

Veltman was trackside to watch the race named in her honor. A native of Michigan, she is ranked 13th on the list of all-time leading jockeys by wins. Overall, she won 71 races and more than $1.1 million to lead all female Quarter Horse jockeys, including her daughter Natasha Perez, who rode prior to converting over to training a few years ago.

Veltman also holds the record for most wins by a female Quarter Horse jockey in one season, scoring 16 during the 2013 meet. She also established the earnings record for female jockeys that same year with $255,833 accumulated.

Veltman retired in 2013 after riding for 21 years. She was among the leading riders in both Michigan and Indiana during her career, including a Leading Quarter Horse Jockey title in 2005 at Harrah’s Hoosier Park. She rode year-end champions in both states, including multiple stakes winner Dashin with Silk in Indiana and Babys Rabbit, 2006 Michigan Quarter Horse of the Year.

The 22nd season of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing extends through Nov. 14. Racing is held Monday through Thursday at 2:10 p.m.
