Southwestern and New Washington arrived Friday at the Crothersville Tournament without a win this season.
A pair of wins by Southwestern and an overtime win by New Washington over Waldron launched both programs into Saturday’s championship game.
On Saturday, Mason Arthur hit seven three-pointers and scored a game-high 36 points to lead New Washington to a 61-53 championship-game win over Southwestern (photo).
Arthur (photo, center with plaque) scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, including making 6 of 8 free-throw attempts, to seal the win. Connor Shaffer hit three 3s and finished with 16 points to improve the Mustangs to 2-6 this season.
Ben Kahler and Mitchell Clements combined for 46 points, but it was not enough to get the Spartans the title. Kahler finished with 26 points.
Southwestern is 2-6 this season.
The Spartans reached Saturday’s championship game with wins Friday over Traders Point Christian Academy, 53-43, and Crothersville, 62-57.
Kahler had 30 points in the tournament-opening win. Jace Patterson backed him with 15 points.
Waldron opened the tournament Friday with a 62-57 victory over Rock Creek Academy. Jackson Kuhn led the Mohawks with 17 points. Parker Douglas finished with 10.
Kalann Brown had 31 points to lead Rock Creek Academy (7-3).
The Mohawks then ran into Arthur and New Washington. The senior tied the school record with 47 points (9 made 3s) to lead the Mustangs to a 66-64 overtime win. The victory was the first for new head coach Logan Miles.
Arthur hit four 3s in the second quarter when New Washington built a 31-23 lead.
Ethan Moody scored six of his team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter to get Waldron tied at the end of regulation.
Arthur added two more 3s in overtime to seal the win.
Douglas had 12 points in the loss. Kuhn finished with 11 and Ray Wagner had 10.
The Mohawks closed out the event with a 66-28 win over Traders Point Saturday afternoon. Douglas and Will Larrison each scored 15 to lead Waldron (4-5). Moody added 14 and Eli Stewart had 10.
Waldron played without seniors Lucas Shaw, Jack Fischer and Max Jones, who were fighting illnesses.
The Mohawks return to action Friday at Brown County (3-4).
Southwestern is off until Jan. 10 when it will face Morristown (4-4) in the first semifinal game of the Shelby County Tournament at Triton Central.

JCBank Holiday Tournament
Greenwood sank 10 of 12 fourth-quarter free throws to hold off Triton Central Saturday morning in the opening game of its own holiday tournament.
After missing 5 of 7 free throws in the third quarter, the Woodmen settled in and had fourth-quarter 3s from Travarius Nolan and Isaac O’Neal to defeat the Tigers, 61-54.
O’Neal scored a game-high 21 points and Joey Ortman hit four 3s to finish with 12 points.
Silas Blair led Triton Central with 19 points. Eli Sego finished with 12.
In the other semifinal Saturday, Columbus East defeated Yorktown, 61-60. Keaton Lawson finished with 22 points and two more Olympians scored in double digits to advance to the championship game.
Columbus East secured the championship with a 71-60 win over Greenwood. Carter Patterson led the Olympians (7-1) with 25 points and three rebounds. Mason Reeves finished with 22 points and four steals. Lawson contributed 17 points and nine rebounds.
Greenwood dropped to 6-4.
In the consolation game Saturday, Triton Central outscored Yorktown 21-7 in the third quarter and went on to a 57-38 victory.
Blair scored a game-high 24 points. Sego had 14.
Mason Trammell and Austin Kates each scored 12 to lead Yorktown (3-6).
Triton Central (5-4) hosts Indianapolis Roncalli (8-1) Friday in Fairland.
Wrestling
Spartan Classic
Shelbyville and Triton Central competed in the two-day Spartan Classic in Connersville.
At 175 pounds, Shelbyville’s Andrew Burton finished 4-2 in head-to-head matches and finished in fourth place in his weight class.
After receiving an opening-round bye, Burton collected consecutive pinfall victories then added a 14-0 win to reach the semifinal round.
Fishers’ Xavier Smith defeated Burton, 19-4, to push the Golden Bear to the consolation round. He quickly recovered with an 11-2 win over Madison’s Garrett Deuser.
In the third-place match, East Central’s Jaxsin Prater defeated Burton, 7-2.
Triton Central’s Anthony Toon also finished fourth at 126 pounds.
Toon’s first match lasted 15 seconds before he secured a pinfall. He then lost to Fisher’s Will Hruskoci by pinfall.
Toon followed his first loss with four consecutive pinfall wins and a technical fall victory that landed him in the third-place match.
He faced Hruskoci again and suffered a pinfall defeat in the second period.
Triton Central’s Gage Bryant (113) and Braxton Zimmerman (150) placed eighth in their respective brackets.
